A century ago the
Tagus estuary was filled with hundreds of boats
connecting the banks, transporting people, consumer
goods, food and machinery. Hundreds of fishermen spread
their nets to catch shad, eel, dory, twaite shad,
seabream, etc.
Bordered by an
endless ribbon of sand, the Tagus Valley is an area of
extreme natural beauty with many attractions such as the
famous monasteries at Alcobaca, Batalha and Tomar, all
classified by UNESCO as world heritage sites. Estoril
and Cascais are the most significant coastal resorts
outside the Algarve.
