Both the foundation
and the origin of the name of Santarem are included in
many legends but even today they are wrapped in mystery.
The geographical position, fertility of the soil and
mild climate of this place made it disputed by
barbarians, Romans and Moors.
Among several fine
churches, the Romanesque church of Sao Joao de Alporao
contains a fine archaeological museum.
