Situated on the right
bank of the River Guadiana, Mértola is a town that has
recently been transformed into a museum.
A gentle stroll
through the town makes it possible to visit all of the
three areas into which it has been divided (Roman,
Visigothic and Islamic) and thus get to know a little
more about its history. Leave plenty of time to explore
the astonishing remains of the Roman port, the parish
church, the castle and museums, and the Igreja Matriz,
originally a mosque and one of the few in Portugal to
have survived virtually intact.
