Granite provides the
tones to this historic city with the impressive
Cathedral overlooking the paths through its historic
centre. Located on a 1,075-metre-high plateau on the
north-east flank of the Estrela mountains, Guarda is the
highest place in Portugal - high enough for frost and
snow during winter months.
Traces of Roman
occupation can be found just outside the town centre.
