A strongly fortified
town founded by the romans. It was long occupied by the
Moors and finally liberated from them in 1230 - about
100 years later than Lisbon. The town was of great
strategic importance during the wars of independence in
the mid-1600s.
The town itself is
very attractive, from the triangular "square" of Santa
Clara, with its 16th-century marble pillory, to the main
Praça da República, with its geometric mosaic paving.
