The origins of
Castelo Branco can be found in Roman times with the
settlers who established Albi Castrum on the slopes of
the Cardosa hill. Castelo Branco was given as a gift to
the Knights Templar in the early 13th century.
With its broad
avenues, large squares and a pleasant air of prosperity,
the town is a very good base from which to explore the
border region of Central Portugal.
